THE MITTELER REBBE

The Mitteler Rebbe was leader for 15 years, from 1813 until his
passing in 1827.

During the first years of his leadership the Mitteler Rebbe
arranged and printed the books of his father the Alter Rebbe. In
the years 1814-6 he printed Tanya Im Igeres Hakodesh,
Shulchan Aruch, Sidur Im Divrei Elokim Chaim, and Biurei
Hazohar.

Afterward he began to print his own novella, teachings he said
and wrote. He released one or two new books per year. The
first editions of these are presented in the Exhibition:

46. Sha’ar Hateshuva V’Hatefila, Shklow, 1817.

47. Derech Chaim V’Tochachas Musar Haskail, Kopust,
1819.

48. Nair Mitzvah V’Torah Ohr, Kopust, 1820.

49. Imrei Binah, Kopust 1821.

50. Ateres Rosh, Kopust, 1821.

51. Sharei Ohra, Kopust, 1822.

52. Toras Chaim, Kopust, 1826.

He prepared one other book for publication but never had the
opportunity to print it in his lifetime:

53. Peirush Hamilos, Warsaw, 1867.

All of these books were reprinted with embellishments in recent
years, but there is also a new set of books, Ma’amorei Admor
HoEmtzoi, an anthology of his oral and written teachings not
printed in the above mentioned works. One of these is
presented in the Exhibition:

54. Ma’amorei Admor HoEmtzoi - Breishis, Kehot, 1989.

*

The teachings the Mitteler Rebbe delivered orally were written
down by disciples who were present. The Exhibition displays a
manuscript written by one of his disciples. It records teachings
said by the Mitteler Rebbe throughout the year 1817:

55. Hanochos Derushei 1916-7, Manuscript 1835.

However the Mitteler Rebbe wrote most of his teaching
himself, and several specimens in his handwriting have survived.

From the early years of the Alter Rebbe’s leadership he would
write his father’s teachings, and this remained the tradition
throughout all the years.

The Library has several manuscripts written by the Mitteler
Rebbe in the Lyozna period, before the Alter Rebbe’s arrests in
the years 1798-1801. One of these is presented in the
Exhibition:

56. Sefer V’Zocharti, Manuscript 2237.

A manuscript of a discourse that he wrote in the years of his
leadership is also presented:

57. Pirush Hamilos, Manuscript 1197.

Also presented in the Exhibition:

58. A letter with his signature.

59. Silver Tefilin Cases, contributed by Prof. Yeshaya
Berlin, attributed to the Mitteler Rebbe.
